The Importance of Benchmarking at The Academy

Because The Academy is such a multi-faceted program, that integrates high-performance fitness with accredited and non-accredited education programs, it could be easy to get lost in the excitement of what is being delivered each day. However, it is critical that we benchmark each and every one of our students so we can provide structured feedback about proactive ways they can improve their performance across a range of areas.

When you’re a student at The Academy,  you’ll be tested at the start of the year against the Australia Core Skills Framework (ACSF). The ACSF is a tool that helps determine individual performance in the five core skills of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy. The Academy uses these test results to inform our teachers where individual students may need extra support and helps identify areas for focused improvement. You’d then be re-tested at the end of your final year so we can measure your improvements across every aspect of your educational journey.

The Academy uses these test results to inform our teachers where individual students may need extra support and helps identify areas for focused improvement.

When it comes to helping you improve your fitness and game skills, we test you in a range of fitness assessments that are used in the senior AFL. This gives us an insight into your entry-level fitness and also provides valuable information to our high-performance team to help them design personalised strength and conditioning programs that suit your specific needs.  We test each student at The Academy in the 20-metre sprint, agility test, 6 x 30-metre repeat sprints and the 3km time trial. We use all these benchmarks in each student’s digital CVs and track their fitness programs over the two-year program to ensure we help them understand their progress – and can celebrate their achievements. That way, when it’s time for graduation, our students have a clear picture of their evolution across all our program areas.

We don’t just benchmark our students. We make sure our Academy program meets external benchmarks – for example, our fitness program meets the Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines. We make sure our students accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day, using a variety of aerobic activities and activities that strengthen muscle and bone.

We also benchmark our performance in education  – tracking the way students move through our program and measuring things like retention, completion of studies and the levels of engagement and satisfaction our students enjoy at The Academy, as compared to research data from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research. We ensure our students meet the required level in the Australian Core Skills Framework, and we regularly self-review our internal processes and participate in regulatory audits from state and national bodies. It’s much more than just learning how to play better football – and that means our students get a quality education that helps set them up for a positive future.

We use all these benchmarks in each student’s digital CVs and track their fitness programs over the two-year program to ensure we help them understand their progress.
